Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath whose areas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography. He has been variously called the father of paleontology, ichnology, and architecture, and is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter and tank, he epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the ´´Universal Genius´´ or ´´Renaissance Man´´, an individual of ´´unquenchable curiosity´´ and ´´feverishly inventive imagination´´. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history, and ´´his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, while the man himself mysterious and remote´´. Marco Rosci notes that while there is much speculation regarding his life and personality, his view of the world was logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unorthodox for his time. Leonardo was, and is, renowned primarily as a painter. Among his works, the Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time, their fame approached only by Michelangelo´s The Creation of Adam. Leonardo´s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on items as varied as the euro coin, textbooks, and T-shirts. Perhaps 15 of his paintings have survived. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, compose a contribution to later generations of artists rivaled only by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo. ungekürzt. Jill Craigie - filmmaker, writer, pioneering feminist, and devoted wife to former Labour leader Michael Foot - led an extraordinary life. Strikingly attractive, fiercely independent, and politically radical, Craigie established a reputation as a filmmaker with her 1944 film Out of Chaos, becoming the first female director to gain national attention. Talented and versatile, she wrote several film scripts, numerous articles, radio plays, and successful columns, but she always struggled as a woman and a socialist in a male-dominated, conservative industry. Her 50-year marriage to Michael Foot, the love of her life, involved her in politics at the highest level. The couple´s mutual interest in literature and the arts made their Hampstead house a meeting place for artists, writers, actors, and politicians alike. Carl Rollyson has created an intimate and honest portrait of this charismatic figure, who never ceased to push the boundaries of what it meant to be a 20th-century woman. ungekürzt. ´´Since I was a kid, music was what I wanted to do. I thought I could make it by my own talents. That´s what I wanted to prove.´´ - Willie Nelson A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history´s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors´ American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America´s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. By the time Willie Hughes Nelson was born in 1933, several of the genres he would later cover and dominate had already passed through an entire generation of pioneering artists. The tradition of authentic country music was handed down by such groups as the Carter family, and the boundaries of style and sound were well set by the time Nelson picked up his first guitar. The pioneers of rock music had later done the same for their industry, with Buddy Holly setting the tone for clean-cut hairstyles, wholesome, non-aggressive texts, and predictable harmonic progressions to underpin his unique energy. Elvis Presley was melding rock with country and blues, but through sheer charisma, created a distinct package for the future of rock music. Given this, there was no obvious path for one such as Willie Nelson to travel with country music´s pre-set expectations. Jazz artists were, in most cases, expected to possess a vocal instrument of some conventional beauty, unless they wished to pursue the comedic route, as in the case of Fats Waller, so that door seemed closed as well. ungekürzt. Learn about Tommy Wiseau and the best bad movie ever made in a fraction of the time it takes to read the actual book! The opening chapter of Sestero´s book introduces us to Tommy Wiseau, the eccentric filmmaker himself, as he treats his friend, Greg Sestero, to a celebratory dinner at Hollywood´s Palm Restaurant. Filming of Wiseau´s film, The Room, starts the following day. Sestero explains that Wiseau wrote, directed, produced, cast, and starred in the film - a true passion project. Sestero spends the majority of this chapter detailing Wiseau´s all-around strangeness. For example, Tommy´s hair is long and unkempt, he wears outdated clothes with two (yes, two) belts on his pants, and he drinks glasses of hot water with every meal. Two girls come over to the table, introducing themselves and flirting accordingly, and Wiseau - who speaks in broken English - insults them viciously and hilariously in a French(ish) accent. Wiseau then racks up a huge bill, barely tips the waiter, and storms out of the restaurant in traditional Tommy Wiseau fashion. Wiseau then drives himself and Sestero from the restaurant at a mere 20 miles per hour in his Mercedes. In the car, Tommy makes Greg an interesting offer the day before his film´s production: Tommy wants Greg to star in The Room as Mark, a character who betrays Tommy´s lead character, Johnny. Since 1968, Garry Trudeau (b. 1948) has brought his brand of political satire to bear on public figures, movie stars, heads of state, and even on himself. Trudeau has also advocated for artists´ rights and challenged industry norms while keeping a decidedly low profile. In Garry Trudeau: Doonesbury and the Aesthetics of Satire, Kerry D. Soper traces the contribution of this groundbreaking artist. Trudeau is arguably the premier American political and social satirist of the last forty years. Amazingly, he achieved this on the comics page, rather than the editorial page. By defying convention, Trudeau has established a hybrid form of popular satire that capitalizes on the narrative continuity and broad reach of the comic strip form, while operating according to the rules of combative political commentary. Garry Trudeau is divided into chapters that offer a history of Doonesbury; an analysis of Trudeau´s effective satiric methods; a discussion of the methods whereby he challenged the business practices of the comic strip industry; an examination of the aesthetics of Doonesbury; and a consideration of Trudeau´s significance as a social chronicler through an analysis of his character construction, narrative practices, and documentation of the American zeitgeist. Garry Trudeau is a thorough assessment of one of America´s most popular and controversial cartoonists. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi. ungekürzt. Language: English. A spirited, deeply personal inquiry into the near-mythic life and canonical work of J. D. Salinger by a writer known for his sensitivity to the Manhattan culture that was Salinger´s great theme. Three years after his death at 91, J.D. Salinger remains our most mythic writer. The Catcher in the Rye (1951) became an American classic, and he was for a long time the writer for The New Yorker. Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters introduced, by way of the Glass family, a new type in contemporary literature: the introspective, voluble cast of characters whose stage is the Upper East Side of New York. But fame proved a burden, and in 1953 Salinger fled to New Hampshire, spending the next half century in isolation. Beller has followed his subject’s trail, from his Park Avenue childhood to his final refuge, barnstorming across New England to visit various Salinger shrines, interviewing just about everyone alive who ever knew Salinger. The result is a quest biography in the tradition of Geoff Dyer’s Out of Sheer Rage, an audiobook as much about the biographer as about the subject - two vivid, entertaining stories in one. ungekürzt.
