It´s been years since we won the lawsuit against Sugar Hill Records. I am at a place in my life where I finally feel it is necessary to tell my story. Lord knows I am not getting any younger. Some may not like it, but the truth stands clear when everything else crumbles. My hope is to give you a visual of my group, the Funky 4 + 1 More´s journey as young teenagers from the Bronx, New York. Teenagers who were young inner city kids who broke barriers and became the Gladys Knight and the Pips of hip-hop. The Funky 4 + 1 More was instrumental in paving the way for many hip-hop artists of today. I wrote this book so you may know me as the Luminary Icon. The female hip-hop icon who stands as the foundation for all female MCs/rappers. I wrote this story for all of the young men and women around the world to encourage, build, but most importantly...invest in yourselves. This goes out to all of my American and international fans, readers, media, the hip-hop community, and young, aspiring artists who have never heard of MC Sha-Rock. I give to you the true story of hip-hop´s first female MC...Luminary Icon. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Trinise Crowder. This is the revealing portrait of a prolific singer, songwriter, and performer of country music. Mega country music hits like ´´City Lights´´ (Ray Price), ´´Tips of My Fingers´´ (Roy Clark, Eddy Arnold, Steve Wariner), ´´Once a Day´´ (Connie Smith), ´´Saginaw, Michigan´´ (Lefty Frizzell), and many more flowed from his pen, making him one of the most decorated songwriters in music history. Then he came to a point in his career when he questioned if what he had to say mattered anymore. Music Row had changed, a new generation of artists and songwriters had transformed the genre, and the Country Music Hall of Fame member and Grand Ole Opry star was no longer relevant. By 1990, he stopped writing. Bad investments left him near bankruptcy, and his marriage was falling apart. In Nashville, he was a museum piece―seen only as a nostalgia act. Anderson was only in his 50s when he assumed he had climbed all the mountains he was intended to scale. But Anderson, a product of a long-gone Nashville, worked to reinvent himself, and this biography documents Anderson´s 50-plus-year career―a career he once thought unattainable. Today, thanks to the support of musical peers and friends who believed in him, he continues to forge the path of lyrical integrity in music, harnessing his ability to craft a song that tells a familiar story, grabs you by the heart, and moves you. Anderson is the only songwriter in country music history to have a song on the charts in each of the past seven consecutive decades. A six-time winner of the Song of the Year Award and recipient of the BMI Icon Award, he has taken home many CMA and ACM Award trophies and garnered multiple Grammy Award nominations. With anecdotes of Anderson interacting with the superstars of American music, including such legends as Patsy Cline, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner, this book highlights Anderson´s trajectory in the business and his influence on the past, present, and future of the genre. ´´Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die.´´ (Inscription on Raphael´s sarcophagus) Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known across the world simply by the name Raphael, stands as one of the main pillars of the High Renaissance, an iconic example of the balance between spirituality and humanistic inquiry that characterized the time period. Although he lived just 37 years, his career produced an amazingly rich output, and he completed more works than many artists do over careers spanning twice the length. At the same time, Raphael´s art combined central tropes associated with the Renaissance while remaining remarkably original. As such, his career is worth exploring not only in its own right but also for the ways in which he typified contemporary artistic techniques, including a return to antiquity and the balance between mathematical accuracy, rational thought, and religious devotion. While Raphael´s own themes did not vary greatly throughout his career, he led a relatively nomadic existence, and his life reflects the trends associated with late 15th-century and early 16th-century Italy. Born in Umbria and raised in the Umbria court, Raphael was exposed to a wealth of artistic influences and high culture, characteristic of the early Renaissance shift toward humanism and artistic appreciation. Although Raphael´s talent was generational, his life did not involve the extreme poverty and destitution that often characterized the lives of other famous artists. ungekürzt. Language: English. For the first time ever - a comprehensive biography of one of the 20th century’s most innovative creative artists: the incomparable, irreplaceable Jim Henson He was a gentle dreamer whose genial bearded visage was recognized around the world, but most people got to know him only through the iconic characters born of his fertile imagination: Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Miss Piggy, Big Bird. The Muppets made Jim Henson a household name, but they were just part of his remarkable story. This extraordinary biography - written with the generous cooperation of the Henson family - covers the full arc of Henson’s all-too-brief life: from his childhood in Leland, Mississippi, through the years of burgeoning fame in America, to the decade of international celebrity that preceded his untimely death at age 53. Drawing on hundreds of hours of new interviews with Henson´s family, friends, and closest collaborators, as well as unprecedented access to private family and company archives, Brian Jay Jones explores the creation of the Muppets, Henson’s contributions to Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and his nearly 10-year campaign to bring The Muppet Show to television. Jones provides the imaginative context for Henson’s non-Muppet projects, including the richly imagined worlds of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth - as well as fascinating misfires like Henson’s dream of opening an inflatable psychedelic nightclub. An uncommonly intimate portrait, Jim Henson captures all the facets of this American original: the master craftsman who revolutionized the presentation of puppets on television, the savvy businessman whose deal-making prowess won him a reputation as ´´the new Walt Disney´´, and the creative team leader whose collaborative ethos earned him the undying loyalty of everyone who worked for him. Here also is insight into Henson’s intensely private personal life: his Christian Science upb... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kirby Heyborne. The record was replete with references to babies, childbirth, and reproduction (the album´s very title means ´´in the womb´´), witch hunts, the loss of privacy, illness and disease, and ambivalence about fame. The songs expressed a heartfelt anguish that would later cause some to interpret the entire album as a cry for help, but even at the time of its release In Utero could easily be read as an album focused on physical and spiritual sickness. Rather than being overwhelmed by circumstances, however, Cobain´s songs on In Utero show him - for the most part - still able and willing to fight back. As such, among Nirvana´s recorded efforts, it stands as Cobain´s most personal work.Instead of sticking to the ´´grunge pop´´ formula that made Nevermind so palatable to the mainstream, with In Utero Nirvana chose instead to challenge their audience, producing an album that truly matched Kurt Cobain´s vision of what he had always wanted the band to sound like. Gillian G. Gaar is the author of She´s a Rebel: The History of Women in Rock´n´Roll and Rebels With a Cause: The Story of Green Day. She served as project consultant on the Nirvana box set With the Lights Out, and was an editorial assistant on Krist Noveselic´s book Of Grunge and Government: Let´s Fix This Broken Democracy. 33 1/3 is a new series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the last 40 years. Focusing on one album rather than an artist´s entire output, the books dispense with the standard biographical background that fans know already, and cut to the heart of the music on each album. The authors provide fresh, original perspectives - often through their access to and relationships with the key figures involved in the recording of these albums. By turns obsessive, passionate, creative, and informed, the books in this series demonstrate many different ways of writing about music. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ben Rameaka. This exclusive and unique audiobiography features Jimi Hendrix together with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding at their last concert by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Cologne, Germany. A month later Jimi would appear at Woodstock with his Gypsy Sun and Rainbows Band. The Experience was a major attraction by this time and in the same constellation as other artists at the Festival, including Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frank Zappa, and Tim Buckley. Jimi is considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era. In the early ´60s Jimi, who was an Elvis fan, played and recorded with artists such as The Isley Brothers, The Walker Brothers, and Little Richard. Jimmy said, ´´I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice.´´ With initial success in Europe he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later Jimi headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival, and in 1970 the Isle of Wight Festival. This rare recording is most likely one of 27-year-old Jimi´s last interviews, given several months before his tragic and untimely death in September 1970 in London. Jimi talks about his music, humour, how he reaches the fans, the drugs, how he enjoys classical music, and his greatest wish of spending more time with his parents and family. This is not a music release by the artist or record company and sound quality may vary. We hear the real Hendrix, totally at ease and enjoying his success. Fans, critics, and music historians cannot afford to miss this classic and revealing audiobiog of this rock legend. Language: English. Narrator: Otto Schulz. Prince was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor, serving as a major figure in popular music for over three decades. Prince was renowned as an innovator and was widely known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, and wide vocal range. He was widely regarded as the pioneer of Minneapolis sound. His music combined rock, R&B, soul, funk, hip hop, disco, psychedelia, jazz, and pop. Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and developed an interest in music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven. After recording songs with his cousin´s band 94 East, 19-year-old Prince recorded several unsuccessful demo tapes before releasing his debut album For You in 1978, under the guidance of manager Owen Husney. His 1979 album Prince went platinum due to the success of the singles ´´Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?´´ and ´´I Wanna Be Your Lover´´. His next three records - Dirty Mind , Controversy , and 1999 - continued his success, showcasing Prince´s trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and incorporation of elements of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as The Revolution and released Purple Rain, which served as the soundtrack to his film debut of the same name. A prolific songwriter, Prince wrote songs for and produced work by many other acts, often under pseudonyms. After releasing the albums Around the World in a Day and Parade, The Revolution disbanded and Prince released the critically acclaimed double album Sign ´´O´´ the Times as a solo artist. He released three more solo albums before debuting The New Power Generation band in 1991. He changed his stage name in 1993 to an unpronounceable symbol, also known as the ´´Love Symbol´´. He then began releasing new albums at a faster pace to remove himself from contractual obligations to Warner Bros.; he released five records between 1994 and 1996 before signing with Arista Records. ungekürzt. James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde and is regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer´s Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he utilised. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters. Joyce was born in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin - about half a mile from his mother´s birthplace in Terenure - into a middle-class family on the way down. A brilliant student, he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O´Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father´s alcoholism and unpredictable finances. He went on to attend University College Dublin. In 1904, in his early twenties, Joyce emigrated permanently to continental Europe with his partner (and later wife) Nora Barnacle. They lived in Trieste, Paris, and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce´s fictional universe centres on Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies, and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of Ulysses, he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, ´´For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal.´´ ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Neil Reeves. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/084582de/bk_rhde_002536_sample.mp3. Ice Cube is an American rapper, record producer, actor, and filmmaker. He began his career as a member of the hip-hop group C.I.A. and later joined the seminal rap group N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). After leaving N.W.A. in December 1989, he built a successful solo career in music and films. Additionally, he has served as one of the producers of the Showtime television series Barbershop and the TBS series Are We There Yet?, both of which are based upon films in which he portrayed the main character. Ice Cube is noted as a proficient lyricist and storyteller and is regarded as a brutally honest rapper; his lyrics are often political or socio-political, as well as violent, confrontational, and aggressive, and he is considered one of the founding artists in gangsta rap. He was ranked number 8 on MTV´s list of the 10 Greatest MCs of All Time, while fellow rapper Snoop Dogg ranked Ice Cube as the greatest MC of all time.
